Looking for a Praktika alternative?
Praktika is a mobile app built around AI avatar tutors who hold conversations with you, correct you and plan your study. banter is a web app for spoken conversation practice in everyday scenes. They overlap more than most language apps, so the differences are worth looking at closely.
Everything said about Praktika below comes from Praktika’s own website and help centre, checked on 30 September 2026 and linked in the sources.
What Praktika offers
Praktika’s tutors are AI avatars with names and personalities. According to its site, a tutor can speak to you in your native language, builds a personal study plan, and gives instant corrections on pronunciation, grammar and word choice; you can choose a soft, balanced or strict tone. Alongside conversation it offers grammar, vocabulary, listening and reading exercises.
Its help centre lists Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch and Polish among the languages you can study. There is a free version with three avatars, limited speaking practice and basic feedback; Premium, sold as weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual plans, unlocks all avatars and practice modes, tutor memory and daily challenges. We found no price in the text of its website or help centre. Praktika runs on iOS and Android phones and most tablets; its help centre says there is no desktop version yet.
Where Praktika is the better choice
Praktika covers more languages than banter, keeps talking to you in your own language when you need it, and remembers your progress between sessions. Its free version lets you keep practising with a few tutors, where banter’s free offer is one conversation. And it is a fuller course: study plans and exercises around the conversations, not just the conversations themselves.
If you are near the start of a language and want guidance in your native language, that structure is a genuine advantage.
Where banter is different
banter works in any web browser, on a computer as well as a phone, with nothing to install — useful if you’d rather practise at a desk with a proper microphone. Each conversation is a scene with a goal: order a meal, sort out a hotel booking, get through a first-round interview, haggle at a market. The character stays in role and in the target language throughout, and may throw in one complication, so no two runs of a scene are the same.
You set the pace with three levels — gentle, steady and brisk — and a coach steps in only when something didn’t come across. Corrections are saved for the end, where your own sentences are quoted back with the fix. banter is for adults (18+).
How to decide
Ask what you are practising for. If it is a structured course with a tutor who explains in your language, Praktika is built for that. If it is rehearsing specific real-world conversations, entirely in the target language, banter is built for that — and one free conversation is enough to tell whether it suits you.
